Applies to:

PcVue version 8.00 onwards.

Summary:

This article shows a workaround for compatibility between PcVue and FrontVue or PlantVue

Solution:

Elements involved:

  • This affects symbols, mimics and mimic templates that contain symbols with variable substitutions and that are saved in binary format.

Reason:

  • The read/write formats of substitutions differ between PcVue and FrontVue/PlantVue. (The reading/writing of substitutions does not take place in the common user interface (UIGA) but in a special component of each product.)

Resolution:

  • From PcVue 8.2 onwards (and the equivalent version of FrontVue/PlantVue) the substitutions made in PcVue are compatible with FrontVue and vice versa.
  • For substitutions created with PcVue versions earlier than 8.2 that have to be migrated to a FrontVue/PlantVue version 8.2 or later (equivalent to PcVue version 8.2 or later), you must do a conversion as follows. With PcVue version 8.2 or later, re-record the symbols, mimics and mimic templates that contain symbols with substitution of variables. The same applies when going from FrontVue to PcVue.
  • On the other hand, there is no way of migrating substitutions set up in PcVue versions earlier than 8.2 to FrontVue/PlantVue (whatever its version). Neither is there a way to migrate substitutions set up in any FrontVue version before 8.2 to PcVue (whatever its version).

If such a migration is required, you must set up a special version of the product as a target so as to convert the substitutions to the proper format. A way to get round the problem is to convert the symbols, mimics and mimic templates that contain symbols with variable substitutions into the ASCII32 format. But there are two restrictions:

  • This does not apply to 3D mimics (ASCII format is not available for them)
  • It may be undesirable for symbols, mimics or mimic templates that contain VBA UserForms (since they are lost in ASCII format)
