Summary:

SqlServer setup fails:

SqlServer setup does not complain about missing prerequisites but is unable to install MSXML extensions and the MS SqlServer service.

MSXML 6 Service Pack 2 (KB954459) is installed on the machine and cannot be uninstalled by using the Remove Software option in the Windows Control Panel.
Solution:

  1. Download and install Windows cleanup installer. (Search the Microsoft website for KB article 290301.)
  2. Use the cleanup installer to remove the MSXML6 SP2 from the system
  3. Download and re-install the MSXML 6.0 Parser. Product Version : 6.00.3883.8. (Search the Microsoft website for MSXML 6.0 Parser.)
  4. Install SqlServer.
